The Crier

About The Crier

The Ann Arbor Crier is an online magazine founded in 2007. It publishes on weekdays.

The Crier was founded in response to the increasing ability of web-based technology to promote thought-provoking and entertaining journalism, and the corresponding evolution of the online magazine as a successful format.

The Crier is modeled — both in tone and appearance — after pioneering online magazines such as Slate and The Morning News. The Crier is not explicitly affiliated with the University of Michigan, but is dedicated to serving its campus with a diverse array of staff and user-generated content.

The opinions expressed in individual columns are those of the writers. They should not be seen to reflect the overall editorial stance of the magazine.

The Site

The Crier is powered by the always incredible Movable Type because nothing else comes close. Speaking of unbeatable, the Enkoder from Automatic Labs keeps our email addresses completely safe from spam.

We use a whole host of plugins for Movable Type that warrant a thank you to the authors involved. Akismet keeps our comments blissfully spam free (an amazing feat given what's going on these days). Appnel's Cuttings.App picks up where Movable Type leaves off with providing you archives for our authors. And Daring Fireball's dead simple Markdown and SmartyPants keep our pages as typographically excellent as possible with a minimal amount of fuss.

The Crier was written with TextMate which is unquestionably the best text editor for the Mac. But if TextMate made the dunk, CSSEdit shot the alley oop. Panic's Transmit sat happily in the background and did all the heavy-lifting. The authors of these apps have a free drink on us at Ashley's, should they ever come to Ann Arbor.
